Pre-K Summer Packet

I send home this Summer Packet at the end of the year for my parents and students to work on during the summer, if they choose. Many parents aren’t sure what to do with young children to promote learning in the summer, and tend to resort to worksheets and flashcards. Hopefully this packet provides them with fun, hands-on learning activities. I send home a parent note explaining the purpose of a summer packet, and a list of the materials enclosed. Printable Parent Letter I send home a booklet with several activities parents can do at home with their children.

Common Core Algebra I Unit #2 | eMathInstruction

In my own mind, there isn’t much sense in any of the inequality work that we do if we don’t use it to model real world scenarios. In this particular lesson, we look at classic problems involving “at least” and “at most. ” These word problems allow students to set up inequalities and then solve them using the properties that we developed in earlier lessons. The Lesson: CCAlgI. Unit #2. Lesson #13. Modeling with Inequalities The Video: Posted October 27, 2014 in Common Core Algebra I Unit #2 In this lesson we look at classic interval notation. Although this is not officially part of any Common Core standard, nor clarified by New York State, the notation is helpful for students and I have found that many of them prefer the idea of simply specifying a starting and stopping value and then deciding whether they are included or not.

Should Preschoolers Have Homework?

A Facebook friend recently posted her frustration with trying to get her third-grade daughter to sit down and do her nightly homework. “Oh, yeah?” replied a friend of said friend in the comments, a New Jersey mother named Jennifer. “You should try it with a 4-year-old. ” My youngest son has yet to enter preschool, and when my older child was there, he spent more time in “circle” than on worksheets. Jennifer said that nightly homework assignments sent home with her preschooler frustrated both of them. “I watch him slumped over our coffee table, fake crying and moaning, begging to play.

Does Homework Improve Academic Achievement?

A poll conducted for the Associated Press earlier this year found that about 57 percent of parents felt their child was assigned about the right amount of homework. Another 23 percent thought it was too little, 19 percent thought it was too much. Educators should be thrilled by these numbers. Pleasing a majority of parents regarding homework and having equal numbers of dissenters shouting "too much!" and "too little!" is about as good as they can hope for. But opinions cannot tell us whether homework works; only research can, which is why my colleagues and I have conducted a combined analysis of dozens of homework studies to examine whether homework is beneficial and what amount of homework is appropriate for our children.
